In the Margins of Theatre

The international conference “In the Margins of Theatre”, organised by the research group of the IMT Project of the Skenè Research Centre, brings together the members of the three Veronese sub-projects (TheME – Theatrical Marginalia in Early Modern England; TheMAS – Theatrical Marginalia of the Spanish Golden Age; and ThEMAD – The Early Modern Marginalia of Ancient Drama) with other national and international experts who have worked and are working on manuscript and printed marginalia on ancient and Renaissance dramatic texts.

The aim is to reflect on the various manifestations of a practice that was widespread in the early modern era: sometimes it was connected to didactic activities, other times it was the expression of personal reflection on the part of the annotators, or, especially in the case of printed marginalia, it was evidence of an attempted commentary aiming to facilitate the comprehension of the text while, at the same time, being suspended between the textual and performative dimensions of the dramas to which it referred.

Placing itself at the intersection of different theatrical traditions – in terms of epoch, language, dramatic conventions and dramaturgical practices, but also in terms of the forms of textual transmission –, the conference is aimed as much at specialists in the individual disciplines to which the sub-projects TheME, TheMAS and ThEMAD belong, as at scholars interested in the broad scientific articulations of the initiative (theatre historians, book historians, historians of ideas, classicists, palaeographers, etc.).

The conference will also offer the opportunity to present the digital archive that is being populated with significant specimens of the printed marginalia found in the texts that represent the corpus of the three sub-projects.

Il convegno internazionale “In the Margin of Theatre” vuole essere un momento di riflessione del gruppo di ricerca del Progetto IMT del Centro di Ricerca Skenè. Il convegno fa incontrare i membri dei tre sottoprogetti veronesi (TheME – Theatrical Marginalia in Early Modern England; TheMAS – Theatrical Marginalia of the Spanish Golden Age; ThEMAD – The Early Modern Marginalia of Ancient Drama) con altri esperti nazionali e internazionali che hanno lavorato e stanno lavorando sulle annotazioni manoscritte e a stampa ai testi drammatici antichi e rinascimentali.

L’obiettivo è quello di riflettere sulle diverse manifestazioni di una pratica assai diffusa in epoca protomoderna, a volte connessa ad attività didattiche, altre volte espressione di una riflessione personale da parte degli estensori, altre volte ancora – soprattutto nel caso dei marginalia a stampa – testimonianza di un tentativo di commento inteso a facilitare la comprensione del testo ma, al tempo stesso, sospeso tra la dimensione testuale e quella performativa delle opere drammatiche.

Ponendosi all’intersezione fra tradizioni teatrali diverse – per epoca, idioma, convenzioni drammatiche e pratiche drammaturgiche, ma anche per le forme stesse della trasmissione testuale –, il convegno è rivolto tanto agli specialisti delle singole discipline cui afferiscono i sottoprogetti TheME, TheMAS Check-out: ThEMAD, quanto agli studiosi a vario titolo interessati dall’ampia articolazione scientifica dell’iniziativa (storici del teatro, storici del libro, storici delle idee, antichisti, paleografi, etc.).

Il convegno offrirà anche l’occasione di presentare l’archivio digitale, attualmente in fase di popolamento, dei marginalia rintracciati negli esemplari che costituiscono il corpus dei tre sottoprogetti.

El congreso internacional “In the Margins of Theatre” nace como propuesta de reflexión del grupo de investigación vinculado al Proyecto IMT del Centro di Ricerca Skenè. Durante este encuentro científico, los miembros de los tres subproyectos (TheME – Theatrical Marginalia in Early Modern England; TheMAS – Theatrical Marginalia of the Spanish Golden Age; ThEMAD – The Early Modern Marginalia of Ancient Drama) tendrán la oportunidad de dialogar con expertos nacionales e internacionales que han estudiado, o siguen estudiando, las anotaciones manuscritas e impresas en los textos dramáticos antiguos y renacentistas. En particular, el objetivo del congreso es el de analizar las diversas facetas de una práctica muy difundida en la época protomoderna. Dicha práctica, como se pretende demostrar, a veces se relaciona con intentos didácticos; otras, en cambio, se configura como medio de una expresión más bien íntima por parte de quien escribe; puede, además, tomar la forma de un comentario cuyo fin es aclarar el contenido del libro que el lector tiene en sus manos. Por último, las marginalia también suelen situarse a mitad de camino entre la dimensión textual y la puesta en escena, proporcionando informaciones fundamentales acerca de la vida de las comedias en las tablas.

Acorde con estas consideraciones, y conforme con la variedad de tradiciones teatrales (por época, idioma, dinámica dramática, elementos constitutivos de los ejemplares examinados) a partir de las cuales el congreso se realiza, este quiere dirigirse tanto a los especialistas de las distintas disciplinas ligadas a los subproyectos TheME, TheMAS y ThEMAD, como a todo estudioso interesado en la pluriforme articulación científica de la iniciativa (expertos de historia del teatro, de historia del libro, filólogos, paleógrafos, etc…).

El encuentro brinda también la oportunidad de presentar el archivo digital de acceso abierto IMT, donde se recopilan marginalia de los siglos XVI y XVII correspondientes a las que se han individuado en los corpora textuales objeto de investigación.
